It was almost midnight when Leo reached the bus stop, just in time to see the last bus disappear around the corner. His phone was dead, and he had no money for a taxi. A woman was waiting at the same stop, reading a book under the streetlight. “Missed it too?” she asked. “By ten seconds,” he said. They started walking together, because they lived in the same direction. They talked about books, bad jobs and the best pastel in the city. When they reached her street, she wrote her number on a page of her book and gave it to him. “Now you have something to read,” she said. Leo never complained about the bus again.

Era quase meia-noite quando Leo chegou ao ponto, bem a tempo de ver o último ônibus sumir na esquina. O celular estava sem bateria, e ele não tinha dinheiro para um táxi. Uma mulher esperava no mesmo ponto, lendo um livro sob a luz do poste. “Perdeu também?”, ela perguntou. “Por dez segundos”, ele disse. Quando chegaram à rua dela, ela escreveu o número de telefone numa página do livro e entregou a ele. “Agora você tem algo para ler”, disse. Leo nunca mais reclamou do ônibus.

Every year on her birthday, Clara received a letter with no name on the envelope. The first one arrived when she turned eighteen: “Be brave. Say yes more often.” The second said: “Learn to cook something your grandmother made.” For ten years, the letters came, always on time, always short. Clara asked everyone in her family, but nobody knew anything. On her twenty-eighth birthday, no letter arrived. Instead, her mother handed her a small box. Inside were the envelopes her grandmother had written, ten of them, before she died. “She asked me to send one every year,” her mother said. “That was the last.”

Rafael had prepared for weeks. He knew every answer by heart: his strengths, his weaknesses, where he saw himself in five years. But when he sat down in front of the manager, she didn’t ask any of the usual questions. “Tell me about something you failed at,” she said. Rafael was silent for a moment. Then he told her the truth: about the business he started at twenty-two and closed a year later, about the debt, about what he learned. When he finished, he was sure he had lost the job. Two days later, she called him. “Everyone else told me what they were good at,” she said. “You told me how you get better.”
